Walking a dog in Mumbai: training does the work that quiet streets would

17 Sep 2026 1 min read 19 views
There is no quiet route here, so the lead manners have to be better.

In a less crowded city you can walk an untrained dog and get away with it. In Mumbai you cannot. A dog that walks on a loose lead past traffic, hawkers and other dogs is a pleasure. One that pulls is a daily argument for the next decade.

The first three months decide it

Loose-lead walking and a reliable recall are both established early or not at all. Short, frequent sessions beat long ones, and every walk in this city is a training session whether you treat it as one or not.

Timing

Early morning is the honest answer. Pavements are passable, the surface is cool enough for paws, and the dog works through its energy before the day starts. Evening walks are for company more than exercise.

Position

Keep the dog on the inside, away from the road, every time. It should be automatic for both of you.

Other dogs

You will meet them, often without warning and often off-lead. A dog that has been socialised early handles that. One that has not will react, and a reactive dog in a crowded street is a genuine problem rather than an embarrassment.
