Raising a African Grey Parrot in Chikhaldara: local climate
The city sits at about 1,117 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.
Chikhaldara is hottest in May, averaging 38°C in the afternoon. A African Grey Parrot needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.
Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 8°C. A light sweater helps a medium African Grey Parrot on the coldest nights.
The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.
For a new African Grey Parrot bird, the easiest months to arrive are March and October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
| Month | Jan | Feb | Mar | Apr | May | Jun | Jul | Aug | Sep | Oct | Nov | Dec |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| High °C | 24 | 28 | 32 | 36 | 38 | 31 | 25 | 24 | 25 | 25 | 25 | 24 |
| Low °C | 8 | 11 | 15 | 20 | 23 | 21 | 19 | 18 | 18 | 14 | 11 | 8 |
| Rain mm | 12 | 9 | 17 | 9 | 15 | 172 | 297 | 261 | 179 | 41 | 12 | 3 |
Climate figures: NASA POWER long-term monthly averages for a roughly 50 km area around the city, so rain near hills or the coast can read higher than in the city itself.
